Here’s a quick look at what my process looks like nowadays! I really only use the default pen settings in sai and the air brush for most of my coloring. Once everything’s merged, I use this brush:

to fix up some shapes which I definitely see better once all the colors are laid out. As for color palettes/theory, that’s still something I’m figuring out for myself, but don’t be afraid to rely on photos/pre-existing color palettes to test the waters!

Why Kill la Kill is Bad for Women (And Everyone in General)

typette:

tinycrown:

I try to be as fair and unbiased as possible when taking a look at controversial media (particularly media that is considered controversial for reasons related to sexism, sexual assault and rape) because it is an issue that is extremely close to me as both a victim of rape and, frankly, a person in general. When Kill la Kill was first subbed and introduced to English-speaking audiences it was received with mixed reviews. Some hailed it as a piece of revolutionary, feminist media and others criticized it for being sexist and damaging to people everywhere.

Under normal circumstances, I would wait until the entire show had aired before passing judgment but after watching some 16 episodes of Kill la Kill I have come to a conclusion, and unfortunately it is not a positive one.

this is a great write-up. I feel like most fans know all of this subconsciously having watched the show, and so it’s great that it’s collected here all together so that it encapsulates what’s wrong with the show.

I feel like my reaction is layered:

at first, yes, the show’s first episode and themes are surrounding a magical uniform that gets skimpier the more powerful it becomes. We are shown several times that Ryuko does not enjoy being exposed in that uniform, she doesn’t like it, and then gets told through exposition that in order to become more powerful she has to “just let it happen, baby” in a sense, to accept it.

Then, it levels up, and becomes a message of third-wave feminism and acceptance with your own body. Ryuko’s self-esteem issues must be conquered for her true potential to shine through! this sounds like a great message of course. If you can use your body as a weapon against who exploit you, you gain the upper hand. Okay, that’s a little bit worse. But it seems like the creators of this show are lucid enough to get to this level.

But then, what worries me, is the statements made by a few animators that could easily be interpreted as “yeah, this show is about ass-kicking girls. We are showing you that we understand the issues of objectifying women and how wrong they are… and then saying ‘lol, we don’t fucking care. show your tits or gtfo’” and that troubles me. I mean, we all know the douchebag guys who wear “save boobs!” pink shirts thinking they’re supporting breast cancer fundraising by saying how much they love tits… or the douchebag guys who happily embrace this third-wave feminism where women have complete sovereignty over their bodies and their sexuality european-style because fuck yeah, that means more tits for me! wooo!

so where I end up having to stand is in the middle. On one side is this “jesus these messages are fucked up and regressive. I hate this stupid show and it’s horrible messages”, and the other “I hope I’m wrong and this really is a loveletter to ass kicking girls with personalities/struggles/uniqueness and the TnA is just for appeasing the nerds”. I just don’t know which it is, but in the interrim, I guess I’ll keep watching.

Similarly…there’s a comic book series called “Empowered" that every girl should read. It’s very very similar to Kill La Kill. It’s about a girl who becomes a superhero via a magical suit. But the suit’s tied to her self-esteem and security. She is so used to being objectified and shat on by douchebags, that her suit is almost worthless and it makes her feel even worse. But, then, she meets some friends who really value her as a person, and make sure to tell her, and her powers go up, and she becomes a super awesome super hero, with strength/speed/agility and all that good stuff. Unlike Ryuko, when her self-consciousness gets the better of her, skin-tight outfit becomes skimpier and fragile and she loses her powers. But when she gets into "I’m awesome!" mode, it becomes diamond hard and covers her whole body(though still pretty snugly). The series has some great female characters, spanning a wide scope of personalities. While lots of "sexy" things try to disguise their motives by giving it a shallow plot, Empowered is a fully fledged and complex story that just happens to have lots of boobs and sex.

The reason I bring it up, is because I see many similarities between them, and while I watch Kill La Kill, I wonder if it’s possible that maybe the show I enjoy watching for it’s awesome character arcs, super badass moments of cathartic payoff, and at times beautiful animation, isn’t just a fluke and I’m being duped so that I don’t bitch and moan about sexism too much. I hope not.

But then I realized I was holding onto something that didn’t exist anymore. That the person I missed didn’t exist anymore. People change. The things we like and dislike change. And we could wish all day long that they didn’t, but they always will.
